History hurt American Indian communities in multiple
reinforcing ways, diminishing and damaging their landbases,
disrupting their families and cultures, eroding their
languages, and blocking their development. Over the
last two decades and especially in the last few years,
the University of California and California Indians
have collaboratively launched several promising partnerships,
combining resources, sharing personnel, and jointly
planning to achieve a brighter future for American Indian
children and communities. Working together, we will
heal history's unfortunate legacies and create better
ones for subsequent generations.
