California Indian Nation and Institution Enhancement Projects

Many California tribes have tapped UCR's research expertise to enhance their own cultural centers, programs, and institutions. Participants in these projects work together to document and preserve cultural knowledge. Everything is gathered and shared in accord with tribal values, priorities, and guidance. UCR seeks to support tribal centers, schools, and institutions. Please contact us with ideas for collaboration! Write joel.martin@ucr.edu or phone (909)787-2137.

Some of our past projects:

The Malki Press and Malki Museum

Located on the Morongo Indian reservation, these tribally led organizations are dedicated to preserving the cultural and linguistic heritage of California Indians. Indeed, the Malki Museum is the first museum created by American Indians on a reservation. UCR is working closely with the Board of Malki Press and the Malki Museum to conduct research of importance to these tribally-led institutions. In 2002, UCR honored the co-founder of these institutions, Mrs. Katherine Siva Saubel with the Chancellor's Medal, the highest honor given by the UC system

Sherman Indian School Museum Photographic Preservation/Digitization Project

Located in Riverside , California , a few miles from the University of California , Riverside , Sherman Indian School is one of three off-reservation Indian boarding schools still in operation today. Its museum possesses a rare archive of approximately 8,000 unpublished photographs stretching back a century. Click here to see a small sample of the archive .

These photos will be catalogued, indexed, sleeved, copied, digitized, and entered into databases searchable by date and topic. This project will help ensure that this invaluable collection is protected even as it gives the collection the wide public attention it deserves. Tribal members, family members, and scholars will benefit by gaining access to the historic images and documents.
