Our Unique Heritage for American Indian Studies
Relating positively and proactively to California Indians is part of the University of California Riverside's DNA. California Indians Rupert Costo (Cahuilla) and Jeannette Henry Costo (Cherokee) helped found UCR in the mid-twentieth century. In 1986, the Costos endowed the Costo Chair of American Indian Affairs at UCR, and bequeathed their considerable library and collections to establish the Costo Library of the American Indian and Costo Archives at UCR. The Costos are featured on the UCR Gluck Gateway Mural by John Wehrle and their legacy provides the basis for a strong future.
